Satoru Tokuhisa is a researcher and practitioner with interests in human-computer interaction, service design, and innovation management. He practices new business creation using human-centred design, service-dominant logic, and effectuation. He's the author of the book "Weaving Reginal Innovation - New Businesses Spun Out of Resources".
He's currently an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Design, Kyushu University, where he runs a laboratory for undergraduate, research and graduate students. In education, he's in charge of courses related to design thinking and creative thinking for the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, and service design for the Graduate School of Design. In management, he's involved in the planning and running of the Creative Leadership Programme, which aims to develop advanced design human resources.
With a background in psychology, sociology, philosophy, economics and computer science, he has been involved in various research areas related to design. After completing his PhD on a design method for creating fun for users of interactive systems, he broadened his design specialisation from interface and interaction design to user experience design, service design and transition design.
His research has been accepted at SIGGRAPH and CHI, the top conferences in the field of human-computer interaction, and has won international and domestic awards, having entered a number of challenging competitions such as SIGGRAPH Emerging Technologies (2003, 2005), Japan Media Art Festival (2004, 2007), Asia Digital Art Award (2005, 2008), FILE (2007, 2008), Laval Virtual (2006, 2008), and U-35 Creators Japan (2013).
In addition to his research, he has contributed to society through business and consulting activities based on his research. While in graduate school, he co-founded UTUTU Co., Ltd., where he planned, developed and operated communication media using innovative technology to make everyday life more enjoyable. In 2013, he co-founded Navigator Platform Inc. and was in charge of Chief Experience Officer. In 2014 he co-founded Wanic Co., Ltd. and was involved in business development for coconut wine and coconut spirits. He also worked at Takram, a leading design consultancy based in Tokyo and London.
He is the first and only Service Design Master in Japan to be accredited by Service Design Network, the international service design organisation. As a service designer and innovator, he currently works for addlight, an innovation consultancy based in Tokyo, advising large corporations on new business development.
