a Singaporean Perspective success 3 Beliefs Of
good grades Belief#1 knowledge is measured by
Singapore I’m from
we have world-class education
LIKE MANY OTHER COUNTRIES AROUND THE WORLD..... we are measured
by grades mostly
polytechnic junior college or we choose either at tertiary level
gpa grading a levels grading system vs
pragmatic academic vs teaching approach (preparing for the workforce) (preparing
for further education)
10%-15% 60%-80% university admission vs estimate* estimate* (with tons trying
to get in)
academic academic = examination approach
NOT HOW WELL.. YOU DRAW YOU SPEAK YOU PROGRAM YOU
WRITE YOU APPLY THEORY TO LIFE
but how well.. You Memorize & REGURGITATE
is this culture what we want?
45 percent showed no improvement in critical thinking, complex reasoning
or written communication during their first two years in college. Source: Academically Adrift (based on u.s students)
what are we really GOING FOR?
what do i want to do Ask not..
what do i want to do WHO BE Ask...
good grades knowledge is measured by Wisdom
Belief#2 uniform everything is
we believe there is a fixed path for every career
“While everything changes, Everything remains the same.” -Aristotle
jc/poly -> uni -> work -> success the path to
success: start end
there isn’t one jc/poly -> uni -> work -> success
start end average great
you must get a degree! it’s the only way -
The Bimbo Singaporean “ ”
when you look fOR A JOB
when you PURSUE higher education
grades appear to be a requisite
You need that piece of PAPER to prove your worth
Do you really?
Don’t Kay Kiang study hard and find a job -
The Bimbo Singaporean “ ” Kay Kiang: Hokkien phrase which translates as "acting smart". It is usually used to describe someone as biting off more than one can chew - to be acting smarter than one actually is.
stop them that didn’t oh wait
“The ones who are crazy enough to think that they
can change the world, are the ones who do.” -Steve Jobs
LIfe’s too short to follow the status quo
path make your own
be disru while you’re at it ptive !
sub-par grades are not the end
"You can make more money on average if you go
to college, but it's not true for everybody," Source: ABC Action News - Richard Freeman Harvard Economist
EMBRACE YOUR STRENGTHS
OF THE CROWD STAND OUT
“Don't aim for success if you want it; just do
what you love and believe in, and it will come naturally.” - David Frost
uniform everything is changing
Belief#3 determine your jobs your success
the dollar we forgo our passions
DOING THINGS WE DISLIKE
LEARNING THINGS WE NEVER USE
aim for an office job they are stable “ ”
- The Bimbo Singaporean
SUCCESS STARING AT THIS EVERYDAY
but cubicles sure are stable
“It's not how much money we make that ultimately makes
us happy between nine and five. It's whether or not our work fulfills us.” -Malcolm Gladwell
YOUR JOB DOES NOT DEFINE YOU
“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone
else's life.” - Steve Jobs
Belief#3 determine your jobs your success attitude
do yourself a favour
CHASE YOUR OWN DREAMS & Not Someone Else’s Ideals
YOU REALLY DESERVE IT
kNOWLEDGE IS MEASURED BY WISDOM in this age, EVERYTHING IS
CHANGING ATTITUDE DETERMINES YOUR SUCCESS 1. REMEMBER THAT 2. BECAUSE 3. AND AS SUCH
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our
deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.” - Marrianne Williamson
