  1. Who knows about “Cloud Engineering”? Accelerating The Scale Up Of

Ocean- Based Emissions Solutions For Addressing The Climate Challenges Faced By Our Generation API Days: Marni Oaten: Deloitte Emissions Solutions + John MacDonald: Climate Arks Pty Ltd
  2. 4 © 2022 Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu CONFIDENTIAL • Warming is

happening faster than predicted. • Cutting emissions and removing CO2 will not be enough. • We need to rapidly, develop and deploy technologies to cool the planet. Climate Change – The Big Picture www.climatearks.com
  3. 5 © 2022 Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu CONFIDENTIAL • More than

70% of the earth’s surface is oceans. • The oceans play a crucial role in combating climate change. • Around 90% of the heat from climate warming has been absorbed by the oceans. www.climatearks.com
  4. 6 © 2022 Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu CONFIDENTIAL • Clouds also

play a crucial role in combating climate change. • Around 67% of the earth’s surface is covered by clouds and they reflect about 23% of heat radiation back into space. • Increasing cloud reflection by just 3% could reflect enough heat to restore global temperatures. • Clouds are the critical cooling mechanism. www.climatearks.com
  5. 9 © 2022 Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu CONFIDENTIAL • Deep Ocean

Nutrient Upwelling So how could we rapidly cool the planet? • Marine Cloud Brightening www.climatearks.com
  6. 13 © 2022 Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu CONFIDENTIAL Efforts to cool

the oceans play a crucial role in combating climate change. Clouds possess a remarkable ability to cool the oceans by reflecting more heat than they retain. Clouds cover 67% of the planet and reflect 30% of heat back into space. If cloud cover could be increased by 3%, global warming could be stabilised. www.climatearks.com

needed to do the R&D to develop the most cost effective ways of cooling the planet www.climatearks.com
  9. 22 COMMERCIAL IN CONFIDENCE Three options being considered Further Example:

Developing a blue carbon portfolio Concept: • Add alkaline substances to seawater to enhance the ocean’s CO2 saturation point • Carbon molecules flocculate and sink to the ocean depths Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement Concept: • Apply a voltage across a stack of membranes to acidify a feed stream and convert bicarbonates in the water to CO2 • Remove CO2 under vacuum • Store CO2 in decommissioned wells Direct Ocean Removal Concept: • Co-locate kelp farm with offshore infrastructure and use platform as a base for operations, research and possibly processing • Sink kelp into ocean depths Kelp Farming
  10. Be curious. Be active. Be brave, bold and aspirational. Be

radically inclusive. Collaborate with new friends, learn about new things, talk about what you value and hope to contribute, and see what emerges.
