Two Ongoing AI-Powered R&D Projects involving Azerbaijan: One in Energy and One in Agriculture 2 of 8 • And I will briefly mention two AI-related Horizon EU projects that I have been involved in. • Azerbaijan is not involved in those projects; but Türkiye is. • We consider indirect partnership with Azerbaijan in future projects. Project #1: AI-powered OptimalPipeline software technology 3 of 8 • Background and need analysis: ◦ Consider oil pipelines ◦ Pumping energy costs combined worldwide, estimated > US $100 billion annually ◦ Huge energy and leading to major (greenhouse gas) emissions ◦ The paradox of oil pipelines: Burning fuel to move fuel • Initial R&D in Canada: ◦ The scientist (speaker) and his team acquired funding from Canadian government, in early 2010’s and conducted R&D on the topic, with industry partners • Solution developed: ◦ An AI-powered software for reducing energy consumption and emissions of pumping operations in oil pipelines ◦ It was commercialized and applied to a Canadian pipeline in 2015 and saved ~20% of energy costs Provide the energy for

Project #1: AI-powered OptimalPipeline software technology 4 of 8 • Current status and ongoing work: ◦ We have started discussions with BP, Baku-Tbilisi- Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline ▪ BTC facilities include: 8 pump stations (2 in Azerbaijan, 2 in Georgia, 4 in Türkiye), one pressure reduction station, 101 block valves ▪ Climbs to a high point of 2,800 metres before returning to sea level at Ceyhan ◦ Technology transfer: Have made engagements with Azerbaijan’s High Technologies Park (YTP) ◦ More R&D will be done in the near future… ◦ Interested in collaborating with us?

Project #2: AI to support “Precision” Agriculture 5 of 8 • Background  • We formed a group of researchers from Azərbaycan and Türkiyə ◦ On the project topic: An AI-driven Framework to support Precision Agriculture, using IoT Sensor data, in Azerbaijan and Türkiye's Bingöl region ◦ And have recently applied for funding to: • Work Packages (WPs): ◦ WP1 – Integrated Data Acquisition and Monitoring Infrastructure ◦ WP2 – Explainable AI (XAI) Modeling Framework ◦ WP3 – Objective 1: Yield and Soil Fertility Optimization ◦ WP4 – Objective 2: Plant Health and Pesticide Use Optimization ◦ WP5 – Objective 3: Irrigation and Water-Use Optimization ◦ WP6 – Objective 4: Carbon Footprint and Energy Efficiency Optimization ◦ WP7 – Quad-Objective Optimization and Decision-Support Platform ◦ WP8 – Pilot Implementation and Validation (Bingöl & Azerbaijan)
