Julie Pagano @juliepagano Hi!
I’m here to share my experiences!

software engineering is awesome
I’ve made amazing friends
the $$$ helps too
but also…
SPITE
I am successful to spite every dude who said I
don’t belong because they were afraid my success would challenge their mediocrity.
I’ve been told I don’t belong at every level of
my career from when I was a little girl interested in computers to now.
“Jules, don’t go into computers. You should be working with
people!” - high school teacher
FUNDAMENTAL MISUNDERSTANDING OF THE JOB
it has been used to tell people they don’t belong
for decades
“Essentially, engineering is all about cooperation, collaboration, and empathy for
both your colleagues and your customers. If someone told you that engineering was a field where you could get away with not dealing with people or feelings, then I’m very sorry to tell you that you have been lied to.” - Yonatan Zunger
when we are told we don’t belong, we have been
lied to
I am so very sick of that lie
I succeed to spite the people who spread it.
I succeed to spite the people who spread it. I’m
not the only one
#SpiteConf
spite isn’t the only way to look at my career
my talks are another way to look at my experiences
Breaking Down Stereotypes About Computing by Julie Pagano 2014
Stereotype “an often unfair and untrue belief that many people
have about all people or things with a particular characteristic"
fall 2014
winter 2018
what I wish it looked like
stereotype: men are better at computers & programming
stereotype: men are better at computers & programming
reality: women are just as good at computers & programming

Maybe we don’t need to give these talks to teenage
girls.

Maybe we need to give these talks to the grown
men who keep spreading these stereotypes to push people out.
