Branding and Naming
Branding
The brand is not a thing
It’s not the name or the logo
Your brand lives in the mind of your customers
You put dots on a paper
Customers complete the image
Everything your company does is a branding message
Heads on spikes
Start by developing a personal brand
You are employee #1
Be public about the stuff you do
Don’t sell, share
I write about programming, startups and design
I organize events for hackers and entrepreneurs
I make open source software
Social media is where I tell my story
Every time you feel like sharing something, start by asking
yourself if it adds value to others
Meatspace helps accelerate your personal brand
You are broke so, it’s all about the product
The product must say what your company is about
Your product is the most powerful weapon in your branding
arsenal
What about the name?
Naming
Focus on the functionality of your product
Know your competitors
Understand where you fit in
Choose a name for a product not a multinational corporation
The perfect name will attract the right kind of customer
People want to feel smart
Ask people to pronounce and spell the name of your
company
Don’t use s3mer
It’s the internet, testing is free
If you are targeting the general public you must have
a .com
A prefix or suffix is ok, for now
getdropbox.com
When you get the money buy the .com
Get the twitter and facebook usernames
An impossible to buy .com is pretty much a deal
breaker
Use domai.nr, bustaname.com and leandomainsearch.com
If you buy a domain from someone use escrow.com for
payment
Use whois
Lift → Blimp
FlirtTape → HipTape
What about the logo?
HelveticaBold
Go to 99designs.com explain what your product does and who
is your customer
Your logo must work in B&W with light or dark
backgrounds
Make sure you get a vector version of the logo,
EPS or AI file
Your name and logo are important but don’t spend so
much time on it
Use what feels right, don’t over- think
You are invisible, change is always an option
Thank You You can find me @gcollazo
