15 things presenters should (really) stop saying by @matteoc

http://preshero.co/

In this Slideshare I've collected the definitive list of presentation worst practices, of PowerPoint no-nos, of public speaking donts. I've created a short presentation dedicated to what not to say, by listing the 15 phrases that public speakers should never say.

Join me in the fight against these nasty horrible phrases that have become the mantra of bad presentations. If you agree that we should never listen to them again, let me know by sharing this deck on social media.

  1. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard

a presenter say one of those 15 nasty horrible phrases… My name is Matteo I love presentations.
  2. 1 I’M VERY nervous/unprepared Don't begin your presentation by priming

your audience on a negative theme. Everyone is nervous on stage and no one needs to know. THIS IS: WHYNING
  3. 2 THE is not working Don't focus your audience on

a glitch, a problem or a malfunction. Have their attention on you, on your content and on your narrative. THIS IS: COMPLAINING
  4. 3 Don't comment on your slides. And never comment negatively

on them. Plus: use really big fonts! YOU PROBABLY can’t read this THIS IS: COMPLAINING
  5. 4 LET ME read this aloud You should quote by

heart or paraphrase rather than read something aloud. And never turn your back on your audience and look at your slides. THE FLOW YOU ARE BREAKING
  6. 5 IF I COULD NOW HAVE your undivided attention We

live in the age of distraction. You will never just have the attention of your audience by asking for it, you will have to win it with your great presentation. THIS IS: COMPLAINING
  7. 6 You're telling your audience you did not rehearse the

timing of your talk. Never have slides in your deck that don't belong in your nal, polished and rehearsed talk. ERRORS I don't have time FOR THIS SLIDE THIS IS: HIGHLIGHTING
  8. 7 DO I HAVE any time left? Your audience is

showering you with the gift of their precious time. What makes you think that you can afford to lose count of it? PREPARATION THIS IS LACK OF
  9. 8 NO NEED to take notes. I'LL SEND YOU THIS

PRESENTATION Smart, curious, interested people take notes. And their visual notes may even look much better than your slides. AUDIENCE YOU ARE INSULTING
  10. 9 I’M SORRY but I can’t see you FROM HERE

Some stages don't allow you to see who is asking questions. Deal with it the grown up way: by shutting up! SUPERIORITY YOU ARE SHOWING
  11. 10 Are you giving a talk or a workshop? There

is still a difference between the two and there is no such thing as an "interactive presentation". YOU ARE LYING FEEL FREE to interrupt me AT ANY TIME
  12. Still 5 bad bad things to go. Feel the need

to keep these slides? I would! Go on and download them!
  13. 11 No one will ever see your laser pointer. If

you need to highlight some part of your slide bring a better prop. LET ME SEE if the laser pointer WORKS... THIS IS USELESS!
  14. 12 Adverbs are (usually) not the best part of writ-

ten or spoken language. They can (easily) be dispensed with without (really) losing any meaning. THESE ARE FILLERS Obviously CLEARLY, BASICALLY, NATURALLY
  15. 13 UHM. AH. WELL. you know. like... Filler words are

a sign of insecurity, and while on stage you should appear con dent. Practice more! PREPARATION THIS MEANS LACK OF
  16. 14 If you say the word "concluding" be prepared to

wrap up and leave the stage in under 3 minutes. YOU ARE LYING Concluding... AND NOT DOING IT
  17. 15 Give your audience some time. Asking questions is hard:

warm up your audience, give them an early head's up or have an accomplice ask the rst question. YOU ARE IMPOLITE ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS? no. great.
  18. If I had a nickel for every time I've heard
