The role of Open Education in emergency situations like COVID19 - A strategic perspective

Presentation at the Open Education for a Better World EDUSCOPE event, 2022.

In this presentation, we will review the potential of open education and open educational resources (OER) to contribute to a resilient and effective education system in the light of the Covid19 pandemic. OER will be viewed as an innovation and enabler for education according to the 4 types of innovation defined by the Oslo Manual. The presentation will close with a strategic view on how the so-called “new normal” following the pandemic can inspire an educational landscape with the learner at the centre.

    They can be any type of learning resource used in an educational setting. 2. They are often, though not exclusively, offered in a digital format. 3. The digital format allows the reuse, sharing, adaptation and repurposing of the resource for 4. a different educational setting than the original one. Open Educational Resources (OER) are learning, teaching and research materials in any format and medium that reside in the public domain or are under copyright that have been released under an open license, that permit no-cost access, re-use, re-purpose, adaptation and redistribution by others.

    the general public caught the attention of MoE which immediately took actions to redress this tendency, for example, by recommending the use of already available OERs or suggesting leading teachers share their ‘lectures’ among their peers rather than requiring all teachers to showcase their own resources. …proved to be a great challenge for the majority of K12 teachers, especially senior ones.
