Design for Sensors, not Screens

Design for Sensors, not Screens

We’ve all heard the statement “Design Mobile First”. Maybe its time to say “Design for Sensors First”. Sensors are going to become more and more incorporated into what we design. From wearable devices to button sized low powered beacons that transmit signals. We need to think about how we can start capturing these signals to help create that perfect, just right, contextual experience for our users.

  2. THE “JUST RIGHT” EXPERIENCE Just Right Satisfaction THE GOLDILOCKS PRINCIPLE

  3. CONTEXTUAL DESIGN Broadly, context can be defined as ‘the interrelated

conditions in which something exists or occurs’ WHAT THE HELL DOES THAT MEAN?
  4. THE INVISIBLE INTERFACE "User interface started with the command prompt,

moved to graphics, then touch, and then gestures" "It's now moving to invisible UI, where there is nothing to operate. “
  5. FiftyThree | Paper - Pencil A unique sensor lets you

flip Pencil to erase when connected to Paper, without switching tools. http://www.fiftythree.com/sdk Palm Rejection, Erase, and Blend
  6. SOME STATS 51% of people reported that privacy is the

main thing preventing them from using wearable technology - Rackspace According to research from Endeavour Partners, 1/3 of Americans who own a wearable device stop using it within the first 6 months. 1/2 of American adults who own fitness trackers specifically--like the FuelBand and Jawbone--have already stopped using those.
  7. Google Glass During a week-long experiment, Active Ants found that

giving Glass and a custom-built stock app to two of these warehouse workers reduced their error rate by 12% — and increased their speed at stock picking by 15%.
  8. HealthKit | HomeKit Now your activity tracker, heart rate monitor,

and other health and fitness apps can talk to each other. HomeKit is a new framework for communicating with and controlling connected devices in a user’s home.
  9. THE CHALLENGES Connectivity Environment - Extreme light, Extreme dark Battery

Life Charging Voice - undo, talking to your device in public
  10. iBeacons Lots of choices, none perfect. Apple will releases its

own beacon soon. Proximity vs Geo Location. More then just notifications.
  11. iBeacon - resources Makes your device transmit as a Proximity

Beacon with iBeacon™ Technology and configurable identifiers. Finds nearby beacons with real-time distance estimates and displays all identifiers of each one discovered. Locate Beacon Lock Screen App Launcher for Bluetooth LE Beacons. Link apps of your choice to places using Bluetooth LE Beacons. As soon as you are near on of your Bluetooth LE Beacons a local notification will appear working as shortcut to your app - slide to launch. Launch Here
  12. iBeacon - How I tracked my house movements Locate Beacon

  13. THE CHALLENGES Battery Life - Signal decreases over time Support

maintenance Environment - other sensors and interference Large variance of signal Delayed response Active Bluetooth Randomized iPhone MAC address
  14. The Smart Wig “Wigs are useful to enhance a user’s

appearance and change other’s impressions because different hairstyles give different impressions. Thus many people use wigs. Especially bald people that usually wear wigs in their daily life.” - Sony
