  1. Flashcards: Epithelium Click through the images. Each image is followed

by the answer. Picture Credit: edited from microbenotes.com
  2. Remember when answering to include features including whether the epithelium

is ciliated, has a brush border or is keratinized. Be as detailed as possible. Start by identifying the location of the basement membrane and then focus on the just the epithelium.
  3. L L * * * * Answer: Simple columnar with

brush border (arrows). * Indicates goblet cells. BM- location of basement membrane Duodenum
  4. Pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium Notice how the nuclei are at

different levels- this indicates pseudostratified. The cells are also columnar shaped and ciliated (arrow). Answer: BM- location of basement membrane Trachea
  5. Transitional epithelium aka urothelium Answer: Notice how the cells closest

to the lumen sit over top of the rest of the epithelial cells, these are umbrella cells (arrow). BM- location of basement membrane Ureter
  6. Identify the epithelium indicated by arrow A and arrow B.

    L indicates lumen. University of Michigan, Virtual Microscopy Database L L L A A B B
  7. Answer: A- simple squamous (single layer of flat cells) B-

simple cuboidal (centrally placed nuclei in cube-shaped cells, single layer of cells) L indicates lumen. University of Michigan, Virtual Microscopy Database L L L A A B B BM- location of basement membrane Kidney
  8. Identify the epithelium. *Note that the gaps between the dark

pink lines (arrows) are artifact, they should be together as part of the epithelium.
  9. Answer: Stratified squamous, keratinized BM BM BM BM- location of

basement membrane Notice there are multiple layers of cells indicating stratified epithelium and the top cells are flat- squamous. The arrows indicated keratinized tissue, where the nuclei and other organelles have been lost. Skin
  10. BM- location of basement membrane University of Michigan, Virtual Microscopy

Database L Answer: Simple squamous A single layer of flat/squamous cells (arrows) Vein BM BM
